David Maitland

I spent my childhood in the famous Scottish seaside golfing town of St. Andrews fishing, observing nature, beachcombing and playing golf! This love of Nature led me to seek out a deeper understanding of the lives of animals. An Honours degree in Zoology from St. Andrews University, Scotland, was followed by a PhD in Zoology from the University of New South Wales, Australia. I now spend all my time photographing Nature's wonderful things or highlighting environmental issues.

I especially love to highlight the quirkiness in a creatures' character and the beauty of Nature in order to highlight the plight many of the World's creatures find themselves in because of Man's activities. In 2008 I was awarded the title of European Wildlife Photographer of the Year for an exposé of the Bush-meat trade in Africa, and the "One World" Award in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. My work has won numerous international awards including awards in environmental photojournalism (POYi 65, PDN Photoannual), and Nature and Science (Sony World, International PhotoAwards, BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Nature's Best, etc.), and is widely published.

I am a member of the "Wild Wonders of Europe" team of nature photographers.
